Prospects for the European Football Championship 2004

The fact that Switzerland topped their group is more an indictment of Russia and the Republic of Ireland, than a star performance from Switzerland.  As with virtually every international team, they have made defending a science.  What Switzerland are saying is we will pack the last third of the pitch and hope to steal a goal with a breakaway.

Historically, what happens is that Switzerland reach the finals but go out in the first round.  So, anything other than last place in this group has to be a bonus.
