Salvador Dali Biography
Salvador Dali was born on the 11th of May 1904 in Figueres, Catalonia, Spain. He died on 23rd January 1989. In a full and varied life, Dali created some of the most sensational art of the 20th century.
In the 1920s Dali developed his surrealist style, he rubbed shoulders with the likes of Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró. Later in the 1930s and 1940s Dali aligned himself with the 'wrong' people - Franco and Hitler. While the surrealist Dali was brilliant the political Dali backed all the wrong horses. Thereafter many of his fellow artists had trouble separating Dali's politics from the genius of his paintings and drawings.
One enduring estimate of anyone's genius is how many people they inspired, how many people copied their style. By this criteria Salvador Dali drawings and paintings influenced a whole generation of 1960s artists such as Andy Warhol.
After the second world war, Dali settled back in Catalonia. In addition to surreal painting, Dali was fascinated by sculpture, holograms and other mediums for his surrealist art.
To sum up in his own words: There is only one difference between a madman and me. I am not mad.
