River Crossing Test Help

The test is to get all 8 people safely across the river.

Rules for the River Crossing

1. Only 2 people on the raft at a time.
2. The father can not stay with any of the daughters, unless the mother is also present.
3. The mother can not stay with any of the sons without their father's presence
4. The thief (striped shirt) can not stay with any family member if the Policeman is not also there.
5. Only the Father, the Mother and the Policeman know how to operate the raft.

1) Help - and Tips

The policeman can take the thief across, leave them at the far side, then come back for the first child.

2) More Help

The principle is that one parent can take the other parent across.  Note the policeman stays with the thief. Children are safe if there is no parent.

3) Even More Help

The Parents shuffle back and forth.  First they enable the Policeman and thief to cross, then the mother brings the raft back alone.

4) Finally. 

When the Mother brings one daughter across, she must stay there, however the Policeman and thief can return and leave the thief alone while the Policeman collects the last child.
