Fantastic Machine Video - Free Video Clip

Will and Guy have seen many candidates for 'The most Fantastic Machine', however this musical masterpiece truly deserves the accolade of Fantastic Machine of the year.

Fantastic Musical Machine - Main Bank of Trumpets

This incredible machine was built as a collaborative effort between the Robert M. Trammell Music Conservatory and the Sharon Wick School of Engineering at the University of Iowa. Amazingly, 97% of the machines components came from John Deere Industries and Irrigation Equipment of Bancroft Iowa, yes farm equipment!

It took the team a combined 13,029 hours of set-up, alignment, calibration, and tuning before filming this video but as you can see it was WELL worth the effort.

It is now on display in the Matthew Gerhard Alumni Hall at the University and is already been decided to donated this fantastic machine to the Smithsonian museum.  See our fantastic machine video below.

Fantastic Musical Machine - Second Bank of Trumpets

What you can see much better on the free video is how the balls are launched from 'trumpets' and then 'ping' on various musical instruments.  In the above picture you can just make out 4 balls arcing towards the top.  Meanwhile there are at least three balls about to land on the cups at the bottom.

Fantastic Musical Machine - Third Bank with Drums and Cymbals

Here above we can see two balls in the air, on the video you can see the precision timing and hear the music that results.

Fantastic Musical Machine - Fourth Bank with Xylophone

Finally we can see the pattern made by the 6, or possibly 7 balls in the center of the picture.  Imagine how the machine, or the skill of the designers, could transform this visual pattern into music.
